Severe Space Weather Threats to Modern Infrastructure

Our modern technology has become increasingly vulnerable to space weather – changes in the near space environment driven by the Sun that cause disruption to power supplies, aviation, satellites, communications, positioning, navigation and timing signals and much more.  In this talk, Professor Horne will discuss some of the big eruptions on the Sun that cause disruption at the Earth.  He will show some of the observations from the polar regions and satellites used to observe space weather and some of the research to assess the impact of a severe event.  He will also discuss the impacts and how they could be mitigated, and new research to develop space weather forecasting models to help protect satellites from harmful particle radiation.
